ABSTRACT
Energy sources and supply in Nigeria and the world at large is a major issue of concern, ranging from its shortage or low availability to its effects on the environment. Advances have been made on obtaining a more environmentally friendly sources of fuel which would be useful for various domestic, industrial and commercial purposes.
The work of this research takes a shift from the regular usage of food crops as well as a shift from the regular bioethanol fuel, holding to the fact that a continuous usage of food crops tends to bring about shortage of food crops and high cost of purchase. The research tends to evaluate the potential of using biobutanol fuel obtained from simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) of cornstover with glucose supplementation.
The optimum pretreatment condition using acid pretreatment was analyzed using the respond surface methodology (RSM) and was found to be at a temperature of 124 °C, Time 20 minutes and acid concentration of 0.92M H₂SO₄. The pretreated condition was then used in enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation using cellulase enzyme and clostridium acetobutylicum. A comparative study was then carried out by using the same optimum condition as well as SSF with glucose supplementation in the fermentation broth and a standard refractometer was used to determine the alcohol content. The result obtained showed higher alcohol content with that supplemented with glucose and this is traceable to the ability of C. acetobutylicum to easily hydrolyze glucose.
