ABSTRACT
Detarium Microcarpum is a medicinal plant that has been used to treat various diseases across Africa. The stem bark of the plant was extracted using methanol solvent. Thereafter, the extracts were fractionated using petroleum ether and Dichloromethane as solvents. The qualitative analysis involved the use of specific tests to investigate the presence of phytochemicals such as flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, cardiac glycosides, reducing sugars, steroids and tannins. Furthermore, quantitative analysis focused on determining the concentration of key phytochemicals including total phenol content, total flavonoid content and total tannin content were carried out using spectrophotometry at specific absorbance to quantify these compounds. The result of the qualitative phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, cardiac glycosides, reducing sugars, steroids and tannins. However, the result from quantitative phytochemical analysis showed appreciable amount of total phenol content, total flavonoid content and total tannin content. Therefore, this study suggests that the stem bark of D. Microcarpum has phytochemical constituents, providing valuable insights into its medicinal and pharmacological properties.
