ABSTRACT
This research was carried out to compare the coagulating effects of moringa seed powder with alum (aluminium sulphate) on waste water. The cost of moringa seeds which is a natural coagulant is less expensive compared to the conventional coagulant alum for water purification and since it is available in most rural communities in Nigeria where treated water is a scarce resource. It is in this light this research was carried out to confirm the effectiveness of powdered extract of matured and dried M. oleifera seeds, which is commonly available in most communities in the country. The properties that were compared includes pH, Total dissolved solids, Dissolved Oxygen, Electrical Conductivity, Turbidity and Salinity. It was observed that the total dissolved solids was decreasing with time in both cases but the TDS with time was lesser with moringa seeds than with alum. Also it was observed that the turbidity of the waste water was reduced with moringa seeds and the pH was measured to be 8.31 which is within the appropriate range for safe water. Findings from this research showed that M. oleifera, a natural coagulant has a good coagulating efficiency.
