ABSTRACT

Azanza garckeana is a member of the Malvaceae. It is a known fruit tree predominantly found in Gombe State Nigeria. It is noted that the seeds of Azanza garceana are discarded, while the roots are known for its therapeutic purposes. This study thoroughly explores the bioactive compounds in the roots and seeds of Azanza garceana. The pulverized seeds and roots of Azanza garckeana were soaked in ethylacetate solvent and subjected to gas chromatography mass spectrometry for the Identification and quantification of bioactive compounds. The results showed a total of 48 compounds corresponding with 15 and 33 bioactive compounds in seeds and roots. In the root ethylacetate extract the compound n-Hexadecanoic acid has the highest concentration, with a peak area of 100% and is reported to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypocholesterolemic and cancer prevention activities. In the seed ethylacetate extract of azanza garckeana, Hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester is the most abundant compound present with a peak area of 100% and is reported to have Antioxidant, Hypocholesterolemic Nematicide, Pesticide, Lubricant, Antiandrogenic, Flavor, Hemolytic 5-Alpha reductase inhibitor activities. From the result obtained, compounds like n-Hexadecanoic acid, 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid, 9-Octadecenoic acid were seen to be present in both the seeds and roots ethyl-acetate extract. This unique profile suggests potential applications in medicine.
