COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE AWARENESS OF QUANTITY SURVEYING AND OTHER BUILT ENVIRONMENT PROFESSIONS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

Quantity surveying is one of the built environment or construction profession, whose concern is ensuring that the resources of the construction industry are put to the best use or advantage. Other construction industry professions used in this study include, Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical engineer, civil/structural engineer), Architecture, Building technology, Estate management, and Urban and regional planning professionals. The study investigated awareness of quantity surveying compare to other professions among secondary schools students, factors impacting level of awareness and strategies that can be used to enhanced awareness among the students. A random sampling method was used to select 109 students which becomes the sample size. A total of 109 questionnaire was administered, all was responded to, received coded and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS V.16). The results obtained from the analysis Show that there is more awareness in Engineering, Architecture, to quantity surveying , which ranked 5th and 6th, with mean score of 2.417 and 2.384 compared to 3.932 and 3.397 in the sister professions. This is considered low in both private and public schools. The factors that were identified to mostly impact on awareness are; not enough publicity and sensitization, the profession is not employing necessary technology, corruption in public projects, they cannot easily be found, conservative attitude and their visibility in projects is vague. The strategies identified as an awareness creating measure are in the order, special skills of individual student should be discovered early (catch them young approach), Career talks, Sponsorship and scholarship, career orientation, guidance and counselling, application of social media platform, and the use of print media, radio and television broadcast.
