ABSTRACT
In this study, the application of adsorbent in the adsorption process to remove dye pollutants from industrial effluents has been studied. Factors affecting dye adsorption such as contact time, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent amount were considered. The sawdust was processed into activated carbon and activated with phosphoric acid and the dye solutions were prepared. This research investigates the adsorption equilibrium of synthetic cationic dye, from aqueous media using activated carbon prepared from an agro-waste, sawdust. The adsorption processes were carried out by varying the initial concentration from 100mg/L to 500mg/L; contact time of 10mins to 50mins; adsorbent dosage of 0.1g to 0.5g. The samples were analyzed using the visible spectrophotometer. Maximum adsorption of about 59% was obtained at a adsorbent dosage of 1g/100ml, about 65% removal was obtained at contact time of 30min, about 49% adsorption was obtained at initial concentration of 200mg/L. The equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir isotherm model. The experimental results indicate that the agro-waste derived activated carbon is a viable adsorbent for the remediation of dye-contaminated water.
