ABSTRACT

Integrated Science is a compendium of the major science subjects; Biology, Physics and Chemistry. The knowledge of Integrated Science at the junior secondary school level helps to prepare the students ahead of learning the science subjects in senior secondary school. There is a verified relationship between good performance in Integrated science and better performance in any of the three main science subjects in senior secondary school level. Due to the significance of Integrated Science, there have been wide-spread concerns over students’ performance in Integrated science. It is in view of this that the study carried out a comparative analysis of junior secondary students performance in integrated science in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

In order to achieve the purpose of the study, the research adopted a survey design in which the students’ result sheets were used as an instrument for data collection. Simple random sampling technique was used in the selection of the research sample in which two secondary schools were selected. The two selected secondary schools were further stratified into one private school and one public school. The private school was located in an urban area while the public school was located in a rural area. Fifty students were simple randomly selected from each of the two secondary schools making a total of 100 students selected for the study. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that private school students performed better than students in public schools, there is no difference between male and female junior secondary school student’s academic performance in integrated science based on gender and there is no difference between students’ performance in Integrated science based on school location.

Subsequently, the following recommendations were made, Students should be given equal opportunity and the same level of encouragement irrespective of their gender, government should fund the provision of learning facilities in public schools, Integrated science teachers should adopt adequate teaching methods to enhance students’ performance in Integrated Science and scholarship opportunities should be made available by the government and other institutions to enhance scientific literacy among junior secondary school students.
