ABSTRACT

Water is one of the most important of all natural resources known on earth. The safety of portable water is important for the health and is affected by various contaminants which cause serious health problems. Due to these contaminants, the quality of the portable water becomes poor which is the main cause of a lot of diseases in humans, so the quality of the water must be tested . This study is aimed at comparing the physico-chemical properties of water from the Lamingo dam and Laminga treatment plant in Jos, plateau state Nigeria to the WHO standard. The maximum number of physical and chemical parameters are required to be within the standard as suggested by WHO (2006).The water quality parameters of interest are, pH, temperature, turbidity, total hardness, residual chlorine, Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO).The result from the study proves that the sampled water from the Lamingo dam were found within the WHO permissible limit for surface water. The results from the water samples collected from the Laminga treatment plant were also found within the WHO standard with exception to the dissolved oxygen which was found to be lower than WHO standard, the pH for day 5 was found to be acidic and the residual chlorine for day1, day3, and day4 were below the WHO permissible limit.
