ABSTRACT
In Nigeria, a popular beverage known as Zobo is made from the Calyces of Hibiscus Sabdariffa which is also a medicinal plant. This study is aimed at preliminary phytochemical investigation of the calyces of Hibiscus Sabdariffa using three different solvents (Local gin (ogogoro), ethanol and hexane). The calyces of Hibiscus Sabdariffa were purchased from Uselu market, Benin city and pulverized for extraction by maceration using the three solvents. Phytochemical screening were performed according to standard methods and procedures. Glycosides, reducing sugars and saponnins were present in all the three extracts, while eugenols, terpenoids, Alkaloids and phenolics were present in local gin and ethanol extract but were absent in hexane extract. The presence of these useful phytochemicals corroborates the use of the plant as a source of non-nutritive but medicinal constituents in the zobo drink from the plant.
