ABSTRACT
Justicia carnea is a medicinal plant that belongs to the family Acanthaceae, it is widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment and management of a wide range of ailments. The phytochemical properties of leaves and stem extract of Justicia carnea using hexane as solvent were evaluated in this study. The leaves and stem of Justicia carnea was extracted using hexane by maceration method. The phytochemical constituents of the extracts were determined using standard method. The phytochemical analysis result revealed the presence of glycosides, phenolics, alkaloids and reducing sugar in both extracts. While tannins, steroids flavonoids, terpenoids, Eugenols and saponins were absent in both extracts. This research shows that Justicia carnea leaves and stem are good source of important phytochemicals and these compounds are known to have some therapeutic properties against several pathogens, which supports its traditional use for prevention of illness, provision of health benefits and curing of disease.
