ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine qualitative phytochemical screening of the leaves of Justicia carnea a Nigerian plant with medicinal potentials. The powdered sample was extracted using ethanol, local gin and aqueous solvents by maceration method and after which the extract was concentrated using a rotary evaporator. The phytochemical screening was carried out using standard methods. Saponins, phenolics, alkaloids and reducing sugar were found present in each of the extracts while glycoside was present present in local gin and ethanol extracts but absent in aqueous extract. Local gin extract and aqueous extract contains terpenoids but it was absent in ethanol extract. Tannins and steroid were absent in all of the extracts. Flavonoid and eugenols were found present in ethanol extract but were absent in both local gin and aqueous extracts. It has been shown from this study that Justicia carnea leaves extracts contains a number of phytochemicals which are known to possess pharmacological activities with remarkable therapeutic potential which are necessary in the synthesis of drugs.
