ABSTRACT

In this study, abattoir wastewater was analyzed for physico-chemical characteristics (pH, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, hardness, alkalinity, total Kjedhal nitrogen, total Phosphorus, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, electrical conductivity, chloride, potassium and bacteria count). Biological treatment by mechanical aeration and chemical treatment using Calcium Hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 was carried out. Comparative evaluation of results before and after treatment revealed that the raw abattoir effluent was highly contaminated and unhygienic for reuse. The range of values obtained and percentage reduction were: turbidity (from 1365.71 to 36.66NTU; 97.32% reduction), COD (from 786.75 to 132.02mg/L; 83.22% reduction), TSS (from 5150 to 433.33mg/L; 91.59% reduction), Phosphorus (from 657.48 to 137.38mg/L; 79.12% reduction), BOD (from 5.0 to 2.7mg/L; 46% reduction). The treatment method was shown to be effective in the treatment of abattoir wastewater.
