ABSTRACT

A study was carried out to comparatively assess the effect of water soluble fractions (WSF) of spent and unspent lubricating oil on the growth of Dictyosphaerium pulchellum and Chlamydomonas sp. microalgae at different concentrations. The concentrations used were 0%, 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 %, 50 % and 100 %. The inhibition of Chlamydomonas sp in spent lubricating oil was generally higher in most concentration. The inhibition of both test algae in unspent lubricating oil, increased consistently with increasing concentration of unspent lubricating oil. By and large Chlamydomonas sp was more inhibited than Dictyosphaerium pulchellum in most concentration.
