ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to evaluate both the role of broadcast media as well as the role of interpersonal communication in the process of rural mobilization. One hundred eighty people living in rural areas participated in the study after being chosen at random. It was discovered that residents of Ikpoba-okha had their initial interaction with the spread of knowledge through broadcasting media. Because of three primary criteria, interpersonal communication was more effective than the media in persuading and decision making. Face to face communication is more flexible and gives an immediate response to instantaneous feedback. Interpersonal communication was also more effective than the media in problem solving. There is no connection between the beliefs held by the inhabitants of Ikpoba-okha and the ownership of the source of such a message in any way, shape or form. The research was able to recommend that messages in the media should be simple, accurate, and easy to understand; that more vernacular should be used; that the message should be geared to the interest of the rural listeners or viewers; that the government should consider setting up more television viewing centers; and that interpersonal channels should be vigorously used to complement any broadcast media effort that is being used.
