ABSTRACT

The study for the bioethanol production from different agricultural wastes (pawpaw, pineapple, watermelon and orange) was carried out with the aim of comparing the bioethanol yield from each agricultural waste. The bioethanol production from the agricultural waste was carried using the single and multi-culture liquid fermentation methods. Yeast cells from pasteurized palm wine were used as the source of yeast for the fermentation while microorganisms from the different agricultural waste served as a source for the multi-cultural liquid fermentation. The production of bioethanol from the agricultural waste was determined by the measurement of pH, density, sugar content and titratable acidity of the fermenting medium. The estimated bioethanol production was determined using the Homebrew and beer alcohol equation. The results of the estimated bioethanol production showed sterilized orange and unsterilized watermelon to have the lowest bioethanol production of 0.51% while unsterilized orange filtrate had the highest bioethanol production of 0.55%. Sterilized pineapple, unsterilized pineapple, sterilized watermelon, unsterilized watermelon and unsterilized pawpaw agricultural waste filtrate had bioethanol production of 0.53%, 0.53%, 0.53%, 0.51% and 0.52% respectively. Sterilized pawpaw had no bioethanol production. The results of this study has shown that agricultural waste can serve as a source of bioethanol production. Also there was no significant difference in the bioethanol production using single or multi culture system.
