ABSTRACT
The study was to carry out a comparative analysis of Students’ performance in Christian religious studies and English language: A case study of Ovia-north East local government Area of Edo State.
The ‘’ex facto research design’’ was employed in carrying out this study. The population of the Study consisted of 10 Secondary Schools in Ovia-north East Local Government Area in Edo State. It is pertinent to note that ‘’Simple Random Sampling’’ was employed in selecting five schools from the population which consisted of students who sat for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) from the year 2021-2023. The instrument used in the process of collecting data was secondary in nature; the instrument analyzed was validated by the researcher’s supervisor. Data analysis technique utilized in this study was ‘’frequency count and percentage analysis’’ to analyze the data collected.
The finding of this study revealed that students’ academic performance is of tremendous importance in every academic institution and for this reason; the student’s performance in English Language and Christian religious studies remains a top priority for educators. The study also revealed that the performance of students in Christian religious studies notably differs from student’s performance in English Language. It was also discovered that students perform better in Christian religious studies compared to English Language. This led to the recommendation that the service of teachers who are specialists in Christian religious studies and English Language should be employed as a necessary strategy to improve performance on the subjects. The teachers of the subjects should be adequately equipped with the necessary tools and support by the school management in order to mitigate the discrepancies existent in student’s performance in English language and Christian Religious Studies.
