ABSTRACT

The best way to identify a phenomenon is a comprehensive study and reviewing it, in various perspectives. Nigeria is a country known for its multi-facet nature, which religion is not left out. Nigeria is known to be multi-religious, it is important to note however that some of these religions didn’t spring up from Nigeria, they were some of the effects of colonization. Nigeria as a nation has over two hundred religions, which Christianity, Islam and Traditional religion is at the fore front. Each of the religions running with its doctrines, dogmas and teachings, sometimes trying to superimpose it on people. Islam and African traditional religion are two parallel religions, distinct in nature and unique qualities, however, an in-depth study of these two religions with reveal its area of agreement. Hence this study is designed to carry out a critical evaluation on Islam and African traditional religion, marking its area of agreements and dissent, for a better understanding and appreciation of the both religions, and for mutual tolerance and recognition. The purpose of this work is to carry out a Comparative analysis of Islam and African traditional religion in Nigeria. This work employed the analytical and descriptive methodology. Various method of data collection was employed to ensure the reliability of the data gathered. These includes: oral interview and reviewed literature. This research work finally revealed the following: Islam and African traditional religion are two different religions that is greatly influenced by its geographical and cultural practices. However, the two religions have some close similarities in their idea of God.
