ABSTRACT
The study was conducted to comparatively analyze civic education in public and private secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. Four research questions were raised and one hypothesis formulated. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consists of public and private senior secondary school students with population of 6,126 and the sample size of 146 students from the 12 selected schools was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire and civic education achievement test developed by the researcher. The research instruments were validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology. The reliability coefficient was 0.89 obtained using the Cronbach Alpha Statistics. The data collected were analyzed using frequency, percentages, mean, standard deviation and t-test of independent samples. It was concluded that since civic values influence students’ civic consciousness, the teaching of civic education when entrenched in secondary schools would go a long way in positively imparting learners, even as far as promoting social and democratic values among students. It was chiefly recommended that civic education be taught at all educational levels so as to help in improving civic values amongst students.
