ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at determining the antibacterial activity of three medicated soaps: Dettol, Delta and Tetmosol against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The specific objectives were to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the medicated soaps against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Identification of bacterial species was carried out by standard microbiological techniques which included colonial examination and biochemical test. Sterile swab sticks were used to collect skin swabs from the palm of students of the University of Benin, Benin city. Normal saline was added to the samples. The swab sticks were plated on a proper agar plates for the isolation of microorganisms. Gram staining procedure of single visible colonies was carried out to check their staining properties. The bacteria isolates were identified using the necessary biochemical tests including catalase, oxidase and indole test. Minimum inhibitory and maximum bactericidal activities of the soaps were determined by agar well diffusion method. The results obtained revealed that among the antiseptic soaps highest efficacy was performed by Dettol against Staphylococcus aureus and Delta against Escherichia coli.
