ABSTRACT
Background: Visual acuity is fundamental to eye examination and is the most commonly used vision test in clinical practice. The limitations of visual acuity testing needs to be well understood. The most employed visual acuity chart in routine clinical practice is the Snellen chart. However the characteristics of the Snellen chart and related charts have been criticized. The scale is not truly interval in nature and different numbers of letters on each line may lead to different legibility due to crowding effects. These problems have led to the development of alternative charts. Such charts are now standard in research but have not been well adopted in clinical practice, possibly due to the unfamiliar scoring system and the cost in terms of the extra time taken to perform the test. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare the efficacy of Snellen chart and LogMAR chart in visual acuity evaluation and ascertain which will be a best choice for visual acuity evaluation. Methodology: This study followed an experimental study design, carried out on 75 individuals between the ages of 18-25 years who visited the Optometry Teaching Clinic, University Of Benin. Participants under went a comprehensive eye examination, including refraction and fundus evaluation to confirm their refractive status and classified them under accurate groupings( myopes and hyperopes). Then visual acuity of both eyes were tested using the Snellen chart and the LogMAR chart and the scores recorded using the assessment metrics. Data Analysis: The collected data were subjected to analysis through the utilization of Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 21, alongside paired t-test. Contribution to Optometry: The findings of this study will aid practitioners and optometry clinical students to use the study’s outcome to employ the most visual acuity chart in routine clinical practice.
