ABSTRACT

The Niger Delta has been neglected over the years and the environment has deteriorated. This study examines the community participation in environmental protection in Ughelli, Delta State. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches, relying on household questionnaire survey, key informants to collect relevant data..

The study established that the Ughelli environment is vulnerable and industrial, community and individual activities were causing adverse effects on the people and their livelihoods and impacting on agriculture, human health, water and their assets.

The study concludes that locals should actively participate in environmental protection in order to support government efforts.
