Abstract
This study was conducted to examine colonial influences on marriage rites and practices in Awgbu in Anambra State. The study discusses the history of the Awgbu People in Anambra State, the socio-cultural and economic organization of the Awgbu People, the concept and importance of marriage in Awgbu, the traditional marriage rites and practice in Awgbu Culture, and the impact of colonialism on the marriage rites in Awgbu. The study reveal that in Awgbu tradition the celebration of marriage happens when two persons are joined together as husband and wife, this is usually the joining of a man and a woman accompanied by some marriage rites as observed in the Awgbu culture. These rites and the practice of conducting marriage as however been influenced and altered by the colonial factor.
