ABSTRACT

The project examines coherence and cohesion in Edo language. Cohesion is the grammatical and lexical linking of sentences in a text. It is related to the broader concept of coherence, which deals with meaningfulness. The aim of this project is to investigate how coherence and cohesion is achieved in the language.

Data for the project were obtained from secondary sources namely Osemwegie’s poems in Bini and Uwagboe Ogieva Okaro. The data was analysed using concepts from Halliday (1994) and Jakobson (1960). The concepts employed in the analysis ellipsis, conjunctions, pronomial references and lexical cohesion. The analysis reveals that Edo discourse i.e. poetry relies more on lexical cohesion and inferences. The poems selected for the project show coherence and cohesion.

The project is divided into five chapters. Chapter one deals with the background to the introduction, chapter two dwells on the literature review , chapter three deals with the theoretical framework and chapter four which is the penultimate chapter deals with the data presentation and analysis while chapter five is concerned with summary and conclusion of the study
