ABSTRACT
“Code switching and code mixing as a phenomena in the field of sociolinguistics are commonly found both orally and in the written form, especially in multilingual societies as observed in the Nigerian movie industry. In a multilingual and bi-cultural society, literary artists are constrained in their literary works by many problems. One of such problems is the expression of African/Nigerian culture, experiences and worldview in English, the language of another culture. Therefore, The aim of this research is to find out kinds of code-mixing and code-switching, the dominant kinds of code-mixing and code-switching and the factors code-mixing and code-switching used in Nigerian movies. To know the interference in the utterances of actors and actresses while acting, and the roles these play in the movies”.
“This research used Descriptive Qualitative method. The data of this research was extracted from 5 samples of Nigerian movies. The data is divided into code mixing and code switching. Then, it is analyzed to find the possible reasons of using code mixing and switching. The findings of this study revealed that the movies used three(3) languages in oral speech, they are, Igbo, Yoruba, and English. The findings of this research were that, three(3) types of code-switching were frequently used namely: intra-sentential, tag switching, and inter-sentential code-switching. The inter-sentential code-switching was used more often than the other types of code-switching. And in the movies three types of code-mixing were frequently used. The insertion and outer code mixing was used more often than the other types of code mixing”.
“The results of this study may act as an alternative reference related to teaching materials, particularly in sociolinguistic course discussing about code switching and code mixing”.
