Abstract

This project seeks to investigate and document code mixing communicative situations in the Urhobo language. The data for this study were mainly obtained from both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources consisted of participatory observations of the researcher at family and association meetings, natural occurring conversations at market places and motor parks were there are incidences of code mixing in Uhrobo. The secondary sources consisted of films, YouTube and other social media channels where there evidence of code mixing in Urhobo. The theoretical framework adopted in this study was Dixon (1997) Basic Linguistic Theory; a theory that deals with linguistic phenomenon from a descriptive point of view. The study finds that code mixing is a productive linguistic reality in Urhobo conversational discus and syntactically it occurs at sentence initial, medial, intervocalical, as well as final positions respectively.
