ABSTRACT
Most Nigerian hip hop artistes use a combination of English and one or more local language(s) in writing the lyrics of their songs. This study aim at examine the various reasons and motivations for code-mixing in music lyrics of Yoruba musician Out of much music in the Nigeria music industry, the Yoruba music was selected because of the popularity of these musicians.And allthese songs were analyzed with the intrusion of code mixing in the lyrics. The Markedness theoretical framework is used in the analysis of this data in other to explain the role of the musician interactions within the linguistic varieties. The study find that the mixing of Nigerian languages with English music may also be a subtle way of resisting the overbearing influence of English in the Nigerian social setting, especially among the educated. It is therefore safe to conclude that motivations for code mixing enhance communication among cadres of people linguistically united or disjointed.
