ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the nature of code mixing and code switching in selected Olamide songs. The objectives of this research are; to identify the instances of code mixing and code switching in selected Olamide songs, to identify the languages involved in the code mixing and code switching, and to examine the types of code mixing and code switching in selected Olamide songs. This study employed the qualitative method of data collection. The data were primarily collected after listening to the lyrics of selected Olamide songs and confirming that the instances of code mixing and code switching is present. "www.azlyrics.com" and "www.songlyrics.com" were used as sources to double check the lyrics of the selected songs used in this study. The data were organized into groups and sub-groups, and were analyzed by identifying the languages used by Olamide in achieving the occurrence of code mixing and code switching. The theoretical framework employed is the Matrix Language Frame (MLF) model propounded by Myers-Scotton in 1993. After the analysis, the results showed that insertion and alternation were the types of code mixing, while inter-sentential and intra-sentential were the types of code switching that were present in the selected songs. It is observed that Yoruba is the dominant language used by Olamide in achieving code mixing and code switching.
