ABSTRACT

This study examines clipping in Yoruba personal names. The study seeks to investigate the types of clipping in Yoruba personal names, classification of clipping in Yoruba personal names and the analysis of clipping that shows meaning alteration in Yoruba personal names.The data for this study were elucidated from primary and secondary sources. The primary data was collected from competent native speakers of Yoruba by personal communication and interviews, the secondary data comprises of published and unpublished materials on the analysis of Yoruba clipping of personal names in related languages etc. In the course of data analysis, the study adopted descriptive linguistics theory by Ferdinand de Saussure as it theoretical model for the description and analysis of the data. The study finds out that the process of clipping in a language especially when it comes to names, possesses semantic properties that  are of great importance. Yoruba names play a pragmatic role in the structure of Yoruba language rather than the usual banal usage as tags for identifying an individual.
