Abstract
This study examines clipping in Owo personal names. The study seeks to investigate the types of clipping in Owo personal names, classification of clipping in Owo personal names and the analysis of clipping that shows meaning alteration in Owo personal names. The data for this study were elucidated from primary and secondary sources. The primary data was collected from competent native speakers of Owo by personal communication and interviews, the secondary data comprises of published and unpublished materials on the analysis of Owo clipping of personal names in related languages etc. In the course of data analysis, the study adopted descriptive linguistics theory by Ferdinand de Saussure as its theoretical model for the description and analysis of the data. The study finds out that the process of clipping in a language especially when it comes to name, possesses semantic properties that are of great importance. Owo names play a pragmatic role in the structure of Owo language rather than the usual banal usage as tags for identifying an individual.
