CLIMATE CHANGE INFORMATION SOURCES AMONG OIL PALM FARMERS IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study assessed information source to climate mitigation for sustainable development among oil palm farmers in Edo State, Nigeria. Data were collected from 82 oil palm farmers randomly selected and analysed using frequency counts, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Hypothesis was test using Pearson product Moment Correlation. Results showed that a higher proportion (45.1%) and (24.4%) of the respondents were between 30 and 39 years and had oil palm farming experience of above 20 years respectively while majority (64.6%) and (62.2) had secondary school education and household size of between 5 and 8 people respectively. Respondents majorly accessed and preferred climate mitigation information from other farmers (M=2.74) and (M=2.84) respectively. Most (93/9%) and (86.6%) of respondents were aware of flooding and shun sine is climate mitigation factors. Inadequate professionals (M=3.29) was the most serious constraint of climate change mitigation. The study recommends that efforts should be made by government to sponsor extension practices in the state especially among oil palm farmers knowing importance of the crop to Nigeria economy.
