ABSTRACT

In the course of this research conducted at the University of Benin, a pressing issue was addressed regarding the diagnostic challenges associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infection, which often goes unnoticed due to its predominantly asymptomatic nature. The conventional diagnostic methods available exhibit varying levels of sensitivity and specificity, adding to the complexity of detection. Additionally, there has been a lack of comprehensive data regarding the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in Nigeria. The primary objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of the infection among female undergraduate students at the University of Benin and to identify predictive risk factors. To achieve this, a total of 150 asymptomatic, non-pregnant female students under the age of 36 were randomly selected for participation. They were provided with questionnaires for self-administration and vaginal swab sticks for sample collection. Participants completed the questionnaires and submitted vaginal swab samples, which were subsequently analyzed using Chlamydia Rapid Test Device -Swab/Urine (Interchemical Ltd. China). The results of this investigation indicated that among the sexually active participants, 3 individuals tested positive for Chlamydia trachomatis, resulting in a prevalence rate of 2%. Noteworthy risk factors associated with the infection included engaging in multiple sexual partnerships, particularly within the last six months, inconsistent use of condoms, and a history of previous sexually transmitted infections. In light of these findings, it is evident that there is an urgent necessity for the development of a national policy advocating routine screening for Chlamydia trachomatis. Such a policy is crucial because the treatment for this infection is both cost-effective and efficient. Conversely, the consequences of delayed diagnosis can be challenging to manage and may lead to severe complications.
