ABSTRACT

The study examined the social perception of abortion among undergraduate students of the University of Benin. The objective of the study was to the study was to find out the social perception of abortion among undergraduate students in the university of Benin; find out the perception on the effect of abortion among undergraduate students of the University of Benin; know if undergraduates students supports that abortion should be legalized in Nigeria and to find out the social work implication on abortion among undergraduate students of the University of Benin.

The survey research design was adopted for this study. 221 copies of questionnaire were distributed to undergraduate students in the University of Benin. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.

The result revealed that unsafe abortions can endanger women's reproductive health; that abortions often leads to life-threatening complications and that abortions risks may include physical and emotions components like bleeding, anxiety, depression, guilt and despair.  The study recommend that there is need to address the issue of unintended pregnancy in adolescents and youth, and that parents and guardians should make it a point of duty to educate female children on abortion, its legalities and illegalities, and the sanctions behind illegal abortion.
