ABSTRACT

This research examines Child Abuse in Nigeria and the legal impediments to the implementation of the Child Rights Act of 2003. The problem of child abuse persists as a devastating phenomenon with damaging consequences for children, and these abuses remain underreported. This research further examines the forms of child abuse in Nigeria, causes and effects of child abuse, and the relevant laws available for the protection of the Nigerian child. The research recommends that the Nigerian Government should engage all efforts and resources necessary for the effective adoption and implementation of the rights and principles enshrined in the Child Rights Act of 2003 in all states, and concludes that there should be establishment of family courts in every state to handle cases of child abuse in Nigeria, and also rehabilitation homes for children who have been abused should be established in every state. The Nigerian government should ensure impartial investigations are launched in order to identify those responsible for grave children’s human rights abuses. Such acts must be sanctioned according to the law, in order to stop the circle of impunity.
