Abstract

This study examined the relationship between Chief Executive Officer (CEO) attributes and Financial Reporting Quality in Nigeria listed firms.

The data used in the study were obtained from the annual reports of 57 companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange from the financial sector of the Nigerian economy. The study covered a period of seven years (2012 – 2018). The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) attributes (independent variables) used for analysing the study were CEO age, CEO tenure, CEO gender, CEO nationality and CEO financial expertise variables. Financial reporting quality (dependent variable) was measured using the disclosure index issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). The data were analysed using both descriptive statistics and the panel regression. The justification for choosing the panel research design is due to the fact that it combined cross sectional data and longitudinal data.

Findings from the descriptive statistics reveal that contrary to prior findings, there is a steady improvement in financial reporting quality in the financial sector in relationship to CEO attributes by Nigerian companies since the introduction of IASB disclosure index. However, some of the variables still exhibit a relatively low relationship to the IASB disclosure index. The results of the multiple regression analyses show that CEO age and CEO financial expertise exhibited a significant impact on financial reporting quality at 5% level of significance while CEO tenure, CEO gender and CEO nationality exhibited an insignificant impact on financial reporting quality. Based on this findings we recommend that CEOs between the ages of 52 and 60 should be recruited as they will be capable of making proactive and decisive input in any organisation and also enhance financial reporting quality and also that there be an extension of the sample size to include other listed companies to get a more generalised conclusion.
