ABSTRACT

Polyherbal is the combination of three or more herbs for the treatment of diseases. The purpose of this research is to determine the vitamins (A, B, C, D, E, and K), amino profile, and nephroprotective activity of a poly-herbal tea formulation containing Moringa olifera, turmeric, ginger, garlic, and lemon. HPLC was used to characterize amino acids and vitamins (A, B, C, D, E, and K). A CCL4-induced nephrotoxity animal model was used for nephroprotection. Twenty one (21) amino acids were identified, of which phenylalanine (61.30 mg/100g), hydroxyproline (22.73 mg/100g), glutamine (9.20 mg/100g), ornithine (2.81 mg/100g) and lysine (1.84 mg/100g) were the most abundant. Retinoic acid (99.88 IU/100ml) was the vitamin A identified, L-ascorbic acid (34.4409 mg/100g) Was the vitamin C identified, tocopherol (47.5683 mg/100g) was the vitamin E identified, cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol were the most abundant vitamin D identified, menaquinone MK7 was the most abundant vitamin K identified, and biotin and folic acid were the most abundant vitamins B identified in the polyherbal tea formulation. When compared to CCL4 alone, a polyherbal tea formulation at 10 mg/kg significantly (*p<0.05) reduced the weight of the left kidney in the animals. When compared to CCL4 without treatment, doses of 5 mg/kg of the formulated tea extract, 10 mg/kg of the formulated tea extract, and 10 mg/kg of extract + CCL4 and distilled water significantly (**p<0.01) reduced the level of creatinine and also significantly (***p<0.001; **p<0.01; *p<0.05) reduced the level of urea at 5 mg/kg of the extract, 10 mg/kg of extract + CCL4, and 10 mg.  Conclusively polyherbal tea formulation (Moringa olifera, garlic, ginger, turmeric, and lemon) possesses nephroprotective activity.
