ABSTRACT

Characters in fiction are specially created hence it is important to study them with the view to understanding how they are deployed as a narrative technique. The realistic portrayal of characters in the novels eliminates distance between the readers and the narrator such that it is possible to picture or comprehend the author’s message. The craft of characterization is technical, so that successful authors take time to properly develop their characters no matter how many they are. The novels have many characters, yet they are well developed with a high sense of utility. Many characters are introduced, but they have a particular role which aligns with that of others. As a result, there is a narrative harmony which shapes the text’s artistic value. Characters studied are those whose roles lend effectiveness to the narration of the novel. Effective characterization enhances the depth and richness of a story, making it more engaging and immersive for readers. By crafting believable and relatable characters, authors can explore themes, conflicts, and moral dilemmas that resonate with the audiences on a profound level. The archetypal approach to the character study of these texts informs the readers of certain universal archetypes and symbols that these characters represent or rather, belong to. As a result, we are able to understand the factors responsible for the behaviours and actions of the characters, such as; their innate psychology, motivations, personal experiences and so on, which contribute to their development throughout the plot of the novels. This approach also aids in easier character analysis, as the characters are grouped into three main archetypes; Good Samaritan, Villain and the Victimized characters.
