ABSTRACT

Oecophyllalonginoda(Tailorant) is a species of arboreal ant found in the forested regions of tropical Africa which belongs to the family Formicidae and used for the promotion of better health conditions. This study identified the bioactive components present in the ethyl acetate fraction of tailor ants using Gas chromatography- mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Seventy six gram of the crushed ants was extracted using soxhlet extractor and methanol as solvent, the methanol extract was fractionated using ethyl acetate which was analyze using IR spectroscopy and GC-MS spectroscopy. Based on their retention times (RT) and mass-to-charge ratios (m/z) fifty three bioactive compounds were identified by the GC-MS.The presence of various bioactive compounds justifies the use of these ants for treating various ailments by traditional practitioners.
