Abstracts

Characters are imaginary personalities that are represented by an author in his dramatic or narrative work. They are effectively utilized by author/playwright through their imitation of actions gestures, speeches and behavioral traits. They are portrayed through what they say and what they do in a literary work. This research seeks to evaluate Character interpretation in Drama using The Gods are Not to blame by Ola Rotimi as the study. This study uses descriptive qualitative data approach using content analysis. The data used in this research were primary data and secondary data. Primary data from the play text and secondary data from previous research and others opinion on the Drama text. In Data analysis, this study used content analysis technique by comparing previous research in making description and interpretation in regard to the drama text. From the research findings, it was realized that the Dramatist was able to portray the character in the through the following ways, deeds and action and this always actualized through the effective use of literary devices such as Figurative speeches and expression, metaphoric expressions, use of incantations , proverbs , flashbacks, foreshadowing, dramatic irony, language, Keywords: Character, Interpretation, portrayed, imitation, author.
