SUMMARY

Therefore, base on the research and analysis carried out in the previous chapters, it is safe to assert that the Origin and traditions of the Benin Kingdom is traced down to pre-dynastic period in the form of gerontocracy before evolving to the first and second dynasty in Benin history called the Ogiso and Oba dynasty. Also it should be noted that during this pre-colonial time; there were some traditional institutions and activities that were embedded and centered on Benin monarchy which are still evident today in post-colonial Benin Kingdom. The succession to the throne of Benin is still base on primogeniture, the Odionwere system is still very practiced, the Oba of Benin is still regarded as the religious (spiritual) and political head of Benin Kingdom. He is also responsible for giving out of chieftaincy titles in Benin.   The five functions of traditional institutions on economic and socio-political functions are still very much practiced in Benin Kingdom.

However, the emergence of revolution, colonization and globalization in post-colonial Nigeria has changed the socio-political status of Benin Monarchy from Absolute to constitutional. The power and influence of the Benin monarchy (Oba) has being reduced to some level (state and federal) within Nigeria. The constitution only grant them that autonomy in their jurisdiction which is Benin City. Irrespective of this, the throne has collectively work with the government in ensuring progress and peace in Edo state and to Nigeria at large. Thus, traditions is posited as primitive and hindrance to modernity but ironically, traditions has led to development, using the Benin monarchical system as a case study.

Government should work with Traditional rulers since they are closer to the people and they are more loyal and devoted to him. No wonder Winston Churchill in one of his quotes in his book supported traditions. Benin monarchy in this research is one of the most respected in the world due to the nature of primogeniture and, its socio-political and economic institutions which has led to the development of post-colonial Nigeria.
