CHALLENGES OF YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the challenges of youth unemployment in Oredo local government area of Edo State. The study adopted descriptive research survey design in building up this project work. The sample size was made up of 90 respondents which were drawn from three communities in Oredo local government namely; Ihogbe, Abiala and Ekehuan. The data collected was analyzed using frequency count and simple percentage. The study revealed that there is high level of unemployment among youths in Oredo local government area, Edo State. It was concluded that insecurity situation and stagnant economic growth are some of the major challenges which occurs as a result of unemployment in Oredo local government area of Edo State. The study recommends that government should formulate policies that will help in proper check of annual unemployment rate in order to tackle the incidence of unemployment among youths. It was also recommended that there is the need to diversify the economy away from oil sector. Other employment driven sectors (i.e. agriculture, solid minerals, steel industries, railway etc) should be effectively taped and utilized.
