Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges of using ICT in teaching Christian Religious Studies in public senior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Its specific objectives were to assess the currently available ICT facilities for teaching Christian religious studies in secondary schools in Oredo, determine the ICT proficiency level of the CRS teachers and their capacity to leverage ICT in teaching, identify the challenges faced by CRS teachers in utilizing ICT for teaching and the methods adopted to overcome them, and determine the effectiveness of administrative support, if available, in assisting the teachers in integrating ICT into teaching. Structured questionnaire was administered to 22 purposively selected CRS teachers across secondary schools in Oredo. The study identified a clear infrastructural gap in ICT in public secondary schools in Oredo which has hampered the effective teaching and learning of CRS. The study also discovered that only a limited proportion of the teachers are very proficient in ICT use. Conclusively, the study discovered that lack of access to ICT resources was the major challenge faced by the teachers across board. The study recommends that intervention be made in the area of ICT in public secondary schools to enhance the level of teaching and learning and improve student performance in Christian Religious Studies.
