ABSTRACT
The focus of this study is on response of Baptist churches that constitute Benin Area of Edo State to the threat posed by the Pentecostal churches, a genre of Christian organization which though relatively new on the mission field draw their membership from extant churches, Baptist denomination in particular. The methods adopted for the study are historical and phenomenological.
Information is obtained from primary and secondary source materials. Primary source materials include books (publish and unpolished) library journals, magazine, newspaper and church records. Secondary source personal interviews and the administration of questionnaire on a simple random sampling basis. It is established that there is an exodus of Baptist Faithful to Pentecostal churches and that Pentecostalism poses a threat to the Baptist churches and indeed orthodox churches in Nigeria. Baptist members in Benin Area are attracted to the Pentecostal churches because in them they experience livelier form of worship, their liturgy takes into cognizance African cosmology amongst other factors.
These challenges can be met by employing the positive elements in Pentecostalism based on biblical teachings to enhance Baptist worship. Again, there is the need to review and update the curriculum of Baptist seminaries to suit modern trends. Time and finance posed a challenge. Nevertheless theses were surmounted with handwork and perseverance.
