ABSTARCT

This study focuses on the challenges of local government administration in Nigeria: A case study of Egor Local Government Area of Edo State 2011 – 2021. The study adopted the survey design using questionnaire as instrument of data collection. The study adopted percentage and chi-square statistics to analyse the research questions and hypotheses respectively. The result revealed that there is significant relationship between lack of accountability and local government performance in Egor Local Government. The result shows that there is significant relationship between incidence of corruption and local government performance in Egor Local Government. The result further shows that there is slight significant relationship between lack of fund and local government performance in Egor Local Government. The study recommends that Egor local government should clearly distinguished from the rest of the economy, and policy and management roles within government should be well defined and traced to it objective. There should be a clear legal and administrative framework for fiscal management as this will enhance performance. The public should be provided with full information on the past, current, and projected activity of government and a public commitment should be made regarding the timely publication of fiscal information. Budget documentation should specify fiscal policy objectives, the macroeconomic framework, the policy basis for the budget, and identifiable major fiscal risks and what procedures could be used in executing and monitoring of approved expenditures should be clearly specified, the integrity of fiscal information should be subject to public and independent scrutiny
