CHALLENGES OF GROWING UP IN AN INTERNALLY DISPLACED CAMP IN UHOGUA, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the challenges of growing up in an internally displaced camp in Uhogua, Edo State (IDP). To guide study, three research questions were raised. The population comprised IDPs, males and females of eighteen years and below who have been displaced and have found themselves in the chosen IDP camp mentioned above. This sample was randomly draw 200 children from the Uhogua camp population for the purpose of the study. A 5-likert scale questionnaire was used for the study. To determine reliability of the instrument, the researcher was trial tested on a representative sample of 10 females and 10 males from a Lagos state internally displaced camp in Lagos. A Cronbach Alpha value of 0.87 was derived, hence the instrument was seen as reliable. The responses from the respondents was collected and thereafter converted to mean, standard deviation and tables so as to answer the research questions of the study.It was discovered in the study that majority of the participants agree on the various socio-psychological conditions of persons living in the IDP camps; the respondents in the study agreed on the socio-economic and political implications of life in the IDP camps amongst others. Based on the findings, it was recommended that It is very important in broad sense that in case a programme or project which supports IDPs should achieve great involvement of internal displaced persons both as participants and beneficiaries.
