CHALLENGES OF EXPLORING COSTUME DESIGN PRINCIPLES IN CREATING CONTEMPORARY FASHION STYLES, USING THE JEAN INFUSION EXHIBITION AS A PARADIGM

ABSTRACT

This study aim to identify the challenges of exploring the principles of costume design in creating contemporary fashion styles, using the 400 level costume student 1st semester fashion exhibition as a paradigm (Jean-ius infusion). The objectives of this study was to discuss the nature, meaning, elements and principles of costume design, additionally it focuses on the significance of the principles of costume design, as well as the challenges in the application of the principles of costume design to a fashion piece. To gather information on this research, a qualitative research method was employed. The study emphasizes the need for a proper understanding of the elements of costume design so as to ensure a proper interpretation of costume design principles and the creation of visual appealing outfits. Findings of this research indicate that in exploring the principles of Costume Design for the creation of contemporary fashion styles, costume designers must first acknowledge the role of the elements of costume design, which is the basic guide towards achieving the goal of creating a visually appealing outfit. The ability of the costume designer to strike balance to creativity keeps the designer inline when exploring certain principles of design. It was recommended based on the findings that costume designers should acquire a profound understanding of the elements of costume design; this will enable them to creatively explore the principles of costume design and successfully create visual appealing outfit/design
