ABSTRACT

The present study aims to explore the challenges of adherence to treatment regimen among diabetic patients.

The research design is a descriptive type of survey design and the study population consisted of a total population of 162 diabetic patients in Edo specialist hospital, Oredo, Edo state. The purposive sampling method was used with a maximum variation in sampling, and data collection was continued until data saturation was achieved. The instrument for data collection was a well-designed structured questionnaire which was validated by the project Supervisor and two other lecturers from the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental education. Collated data was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as frequency and percentage tables.

This study revealed that the challenges of adherence to diabetic treatment regimen was not far from poverty, disbelief in medical explanatory knowledge, lived experiences of the disease, challenges of everyday life, and interactive/economic challenges.

In conclusion, The study identified multiple challenges affecting adherence to diabetic treatment regimens, including socioeconomic factors, lack of belief in medical knowledge, personal experiences, daily life challenges, and economic factors.
