ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was designed to examine the challenges facing office secretaries in automated office technology in in Government establishments in Edo State. To guide the study, four research questions were raised which are outlined thus: To what extent does the lack of inadequate qualified man power pose a challenge to office secretary in an automated office. To what extent does lack of electricity pose a challenge to office secretary in an automated office. To what extent does cost pose a challenge to office secretary in an automated office. To what extend does lack of availability of modern equipment in an automated office pose challenge to office manager? The research design used for this study was the descriptive survey research design. Random sampling technique was used
From these four research questions, 20 items were raised in the questionnaire together with the data for this study and the questionnaire was subject to Cronbach alpha. A coefficient of 0.77 was obtained. The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. Population of the study consisted of secretaries in Government Establish in Edo State.
The findings from the study revealed that majority of the sampled respondents agreed that the poor supply of light affects the work of secretary to a large extended. It is also seen that the cost of maintenance poses a challenge to office secretary in an automated office. It was seen that that majority of the sampled respondents agreed that the secretaries use the computer in an automated office in filing the official documents, it was seen that majority of the sampled respondents agreed that the secretaries use Electronic Mailing (E-mail) in an automated office. And from the recommendation it was recommended that secretaries should be trained with new modern automation machines and equipment in order to meet up with the 21st century world. Modern automation should be made available to schools and institution where secretaries are trained.Secretaries should be compensated and motivated for their effort in the organizations. If the above recommendations are implemented, there will be improvement in the secretaries’ effectiveness to carry out their duties.
