ABSTRACT

This study was designed to examine the challenges and strategies for teaching English in multilingual classrooms in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Questionnaires were administered to two hundred and fifty secondary school students and twenty teachers in Oredo.

The simple random sampling technique was used. Also the test-retest reliability was used. The simple percentage was used in the presentation of data. The result from the presentation showed that the habitual use of the mother tongue by students at home and in school inhibits the learning of English in a second language situation.

Based on the findings of this work, it was recommended that teachers should encourage the positive transfer of students’ knowledge and skills in their mother-tongue to enhance the learning of the school language. And also, English learners must be encouraged to read because reading in English improves pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills.
