ABSTRACT

The purpose of this work was to review the challenges and prospects of setting up small-scale businesses in Nigeria, (A case study of Ovia North-East Local Government Area). The study examined some of the challenges of setting up small-scale businesses which include a shortage of proper planning, financial constraints due to limited access to capital, inadequate funding, and multiple and high taxes, and poor basic infrastructures, such as power supply, road networks, water supply, and waste disposal. In many cases, business owners often have to carry out capital-intensive public projects by themselves to have access to essential amenities. While the prospects of small-scale businesses in Nigeria can be divided into Employment opportunities, job innovation, and contribution to the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). To meet the general objective, the study will focus on the following specific objectives: To identify the effect of the shortage of proper planning on the management of small-scale businesses, to examine how financial constraints due to limited access to capital and inadequate funding can lead to financial problems for small-scale businesses, to determine how Multiple and High Taxes influence the management of small-scale businesses, and how poor basic infrastructures can affect the business environment.
