CHALLENGES AND DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED IN LEARNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to ascertain the challenges and difficulties encountered in learning English as a second language in Senior Secondary Schools in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State. Five (5) research questions were formulated and twenty-eight (28) question were administered to the respondents in which was to collect response from the respondents. This is a descriptive survey; the purpose of descriptive survey research is to describe that which exists as accurately and clearly as possible. It is the most appropriate design for a study of this nature because it provides appropriate methodology for investigating human behavior, perceptions and opinions of people. The population for this study includes all students from the public secondary schools in Owan west Local Government Area of Edo State. A total of 22 respondents were sampled for the study. The instrument to be used in this study is the questionnaire titled “Challenges and Difficulties Encountered in Learning English as a Second Language in Senior Secondary Schools Questionnaire” (CDELESLSSSQ)”. This section also has a total sixteen questions and the type of response expected is that of close-ended questionnaire option. It has two section viz section A and B. section A deals with the personal data such as sex, and class taught by teachers. The section B was based on the research questions formulated for this study and the issues raised in the literature review.
